Sīāhkal sits in eastern Gilan, where the flat lowlands behind the Caspian coast, laced with water, begin to rise into the wooded northern flank of the Alborz. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets gathered along its main roads. Small paddy fields and tea gardens press in from the north, and the dark mass of forest climbs to the south.
The name carries weight in modern Iranian history. In February 1971 a small armed group attacked the gendarmerie post here. The event is widely remembered as the Siahkal incident and is often cited as the start of guerrilla opposition to the Shah. Beyond that episode, the town is a market and service centre for the surrounding villages, with roads leading up toward the highland district of Deylaman.
A Sīāhkal map poster captures that meeting of plain and mountain in line alone. Streams and irrigation channels run down from the slopes, roads bend where the terrain allows, and the street pattern quickly loosens into scattered farmsteads. In black and white, the whole composition rests on the contrast between the dense centre and the open, finely drawn countryside around it.
South of the town the road network thins as the land rises into the Hyrcanian forests of the Alborz, leaving long curving routes that follow valleys rather than a grid.
To the north the lowlands are divided into small, irregular plots and drainage channels, the fine texture of lines typical of Gilan's rice-growing plains.
A winding mountain road climbs from the town toward Deylaman, and its switchbacks stand out clearly against the quieter lines of the plain below.

For people from Gilan, or anyone who has driven up from the coast into the green hills, this map is a quiet reminder of a particular landscape: wet, cultivated and edged by forest. It also marks a place whose name appears in the history books.
