Skokie lies directly north of Chicago in Cook County, and its map continues the city's rigorous street grid: long straight avenues, major section-line roads such as Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue, and residential blocks laid out with remarkable consistency. From above the village reads as a clear, orderly lattice, with only a few diagonal lines and green corridors interrupting its regular rhythm.
Those interruptions are what make Skokie distinctive. The North Shore Channel, a straight canal dug in the early twentieth century, runs along the eastern side with a ribbon of parkland and a sculpture park beside it. The Edens Expressway slices diagonally across the west, and the CTA Yellow Line, known locally as the Skokie Swift, runs from Chicago to its terminus at Dempster Street.
Skokie is also home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, opened in 2009, and has long had a large Jewish community. The Old Orchard shopping centre sits in the north of the village. A Skokie map poster captures a suburb defined by its grid and by the few bold lines that cross it.
The straight North Shore Channel runs along the east side of the village, bordered by a narrow strip of parkland and sculpture that forms a green line on the map.
The CTA Yellow Line runs north from Chicago to Dempster Street, a short, direct rail line cutting through the grid on its own path.
The Edens Expressway crosses the western part of Skokie at an angle, the boldest diagonal on the poster and a strong counterpoint to the square street grid.

Aiheā Skokie
Skokie is a place of family homes, schools and synagogues, and many people who grew up there keep a strong attachment to their block. Its clean grid and few bold diagonals make it a naturally graphic map that works well in a modern interior.
