Stalowa Wola was founded in the late 1930s as part of the Central Industrial District, Poland's ambitious pre-war programme to build new industry away from the country's borders. Its name, meaning roughly steel will, came from the steelworks at its heart, and the town was designed from the start with a planned residential district set apart from the industrial zone.
On the map this planning still shows. Broad avenues and orderly blocks contrast with the sprawling rectangular footprint of the steelworks, while the San River runs along the eastern side and forests of the Sandomierz Basin press in around the edges. Later housing estates and the older settlement of Rozwadów, now a district of the city, add further layers.
A Stalowa Wola map poster is a portrait of twentieth-century modernity in one frame: the forest, the river, the workers' housing and the plant that made the town. It speaks to families who worked here for generations and to anyone interested in how industrial towns were designed and built in interwar Poland.
The large industrial complex occupies a vast, clearly bounded area beside the town, its long halls and internal roads forming a bold geometric block on the poster.
Designed in the late 1930s, the original residential district has wide streets, green courtyards and a coherent layout that reads clearly even at small scale.
The river curves along the eastern edge of the city, and the surrounding pine forests leave broad empty areas that frame the built-up land.
