Stockholm is built on fourteen islands at the point where Lake Mälaren drains into Saltsjön, an inlet of the Baltic Sea. On the map the city appears as a cluster of land fragments linked by dozens of bridges, with open water weaving between them. Gamla stan, the old town, sits on a small central island, its medieval lanes a dense tangle among straighter modern streets.
North of the old town, Norrmalm and Östermalm follow broad, regular grids laid out in the nineteenth century.
