Sumbawa is one of Indonesia's Lesser Sunda Islands, between Lombok to the west and Flores to the east. It is a large island with a very uneven outline. Deep bays cut into both coasts, and Saleh Bay on the north side reaches so far inland that it almost divides the island in two, leaving a broad peninsula jutting out to the north.
Mount Tambora stands on that peninsula. Its eruption in 1815 was the largest in recorded history. The ash it threw into the atmosphere contributed to the cold weather and failed harvests of 1816 in Europe and North America, known as the year without a summer. Today the mountain is a broad volcano with a vast summit caldera.
The main towns sit on sheltered water: Sumbawa Besar in the west, and Bima on its own deep, narrow bay in the east, with roads linking them along the coast. The south coast faces the open Indian Ocean, and surfers come for its breaks. A Sumbawa Island map poster captures a coastline so folded that it seems to change direction at every turn.

Mount Tambora dominates the broad northern peninsula. The volcano's round mass and summit caldera set the scale for the whole island and anchor its northern edge on the poster.
In the east, the city of Bima lies at the end of a long, narrow inlet sheltered from the open sea. It is one of the most distinctive details in the island's outline.

Aiheā Sumbawa Island
Sumbawa gets fewer visitors than its neighbours. Its map appeals to travellers who went looking for quieter places, surfers who know the south coast, volcano enthusiasts and families from the island itself. Its restless outline makes a bold, graphic image on any wall.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the name of a village or the date of a Tambora climb, and edit the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles. Noir makes the bays stand out. The HD files cost $9 in six sizes, or you can order a printed poster.
