Te mape
Sunderland stands at the mouth of the River Wear on the North Sea coast of northeast England. On a map the river is the defining feature, cutting a winding, steep-sided course through the middle of the city before reaching the harbour and piers. North of the river, the seafront at Roker and Seaburn runs along sandy bays, and terraced streets fill the ground in between.
The city was once among the largest shipbuilding centres in the world, and its riverbanks were lined with yards until the late twentieth century. St Peter's Church in Monkwearmouth was part of the monastery associated with the Venerable Bede. Sunderland gained city status in 1992, and the Stadium of Light now stands on the site of a former colliery.
A Sunderland map poster captures the drama of the river gorge. The Wearmouth Bridge and the newer Northern Spire span the valley, and the harbour walls reach out into the sea. The fine grain of terraced housing on both banks contrasts with the open spaces of the parks, the docks and the long coastline.
The Wear winds through the city in a deep valley before reaching the sea. Its curving course divides Sunderland into north and south and shapes the whole map.
North of the river mouth, the promenade and beaches at Roker and Seaburn follow the coast. The pier and lighthouse form a clear marker at the harbour entrance.
The steel arch bridge crossing the gorge near the city centre is a local landmark. It connects the two halves of the city at a key point on the map.
