Sungailiat is the capital of Bangka Regency, on the east coast of Bangka Island in Indonesia. The town sits a short distance inland from the sea, with roads leading out to a line of beaches along the coast. From above, the town centre is compact, while the surrounding land is marked by scattered water bodies and open ground.
Bangka has been one of the world's major tin-mining areas for centuries, and the landscape shows it. Former mining pits have filled with water, leaving many small ponds, locally called kolong, which appear on the map as irregular shapes. Along the coast, rocky headlands and sandy beaches draw a varied shoreline.
A Sungailiat map poster combines those elements into a distinctive composition. The town's streets sit inland, the coast adds a long, uneven edge, and the patchwork of mining ponds and scrubland fills the space between. It is a map that reveals both a seaside setting and the lasting marks of an island's industry.
Beaches and granite headlands line the coast east of town, creating an uneven edge between land and the open sea.
Water-filled former mine pits appear as scattered, irregular shapes around the town, a direct trace of Bangka's tin history.
The main streets cluster tightly inland, linked by roads to the coast and to Pangkal Pinang in the south.
