Super Besse lies in the Massif du Sancy in Auvergne, the highest part of France's Massif Central. It is the modern ski station of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, built in the 1960s above the old town in an extinct volcanic landscape. From above the resort shows as a compact cluster of apartments and chalets around a small lake, with lifts climbing toward the higher ridges.
Just outside the resort lies Lac Pavin, an almost perfectly circular crater lake surrounded by forest. It is one of the most distinctive natural shapes in the region, and on a Super Besse map poster it appears as a clean, dark circle set against the terrain.
