Szentes lies on the flat, open country of the Great Hungarian Plain in Csongrád, and from above the first thing you notice is water. The Kurca, an old, slow side branch of the Tisza system, curves through the town. Streets fan out from its banks instead of following a strict grid, so the centre looks gently irregular.
Past the centre, the town thins into long rows of houses with deep garden plots, then into fields. That is the classic pattern of the Hungarian plain. Rectangular parcels, straight farm tracks and scattered homesteads fill the land around the town.
