Taliparamba lies in the Kannur district of northern Kerala, a short way inland from the Arabian Sea. The land here rolls gently, with low laterite hills and valleys filled with coconut palms, paddy fields and small streams. On the map, roads follow the contours rather than a grid, curving between ridges to connect scattered neighbourhoods.
The town is an old temple centre. The Rajarajeshwara Temple, one of the most important Shiva shrines in the region, stands in Taliparamba, and the well-known Parassinikkadavu Muthappan temple lies close by on the banks of the Valapattanam River. The town is also a market for spices, cashew and other produce from the surrounding countryside.
A Taliparamba map poster shows a very different kind of town from the grids of the plains. Winding roads branch like veins across the hills, houses are spread thinly among green spaces, and the river curves along the edge of the frame. It is a gentle, natural composition that reflects the landscape of northern Malabar.
Roads follow the natural contours of the laterite hills, forming a network of curving lines rather than a grid, with smaller lanes branching off in every direction.
The river flows nearby in wide bends on its way to the sea, and its channels add a strong line of water to the composition.
The Rajarajeshwara Temple and its grounds take up a distinct space in the town, a traditional landmark that stands out within the surrounding pattern of streets.
