Tanah Merah, whose name means red earth, is a district town in Kelantan, the northeastern Malaysian state known for its Malay traditions and craft. It lies inland from the coastal capital Kota Bharu, in the lowlands where the Kelantan River runs toward the South China Sea.

The East Coast railway line passes through Tanah Merah, and its track and the main roads give the town its structure.
