Tanghe sits in the Nanyang Basin of southwestern Henan and takes its name from the Tang River, which flows past it on the way south toward Hubei. From above, the town is a compact grid pressed against the water. Newer blocks stretch outward into a patchwork of fields, channels and village roads that fill the edges of the frame.
The level ground of the basin shapes everything. No hills bend the streets, so the avenues run long and straight, and the river gives the page its one strong curve. Bridges join the two banks. Toward the edges, the street network gradually thins, which shows clearly where the town ends and the farmland begins.
