Trenque Lauquen lies in the west of Buenos Aires Province, in the open farmland of the pampas. It was founded in 1876 as a military post on the frontier, and the town that grew around it follows the classic Argentine pattern. A regular grid of square blocks is centred on a main plaza, and wide avenues mark the edges of the original layout.
The name comes from the Mapuche language and is usually translated as round lagoon, after the lakes and lagoons of the area.
