Trento lies in the Adige valley, surrounded by mountains on almost every side. From above, the city fills a narrow valley floor, with the river running along its western side and steep slopes rising quickly beyond the last streets. The compact historic centre, around Piazza Duomo, sits close to the Castello del Buonconsiglio, with newer districts extending north and south along the valley.
The city is best known for the Council of Trent, held here between 1545 and 1563, which shaped the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The cathedral and the Neptune fountain mark the centre of the old town. West of the river, the rocky hill of Doss Trento rises above the city, and a cable car climbs to the village of Sardagna on the mountainside.
