Tripunittura lies on the eastern edge of the Kochi urban area in Kerala. It is separated from the older port districts by backwaters and low wetland. From above, it looks greener and less dense than central Kochi. Tree-lined lanes, temple precincts and compounds are set among waterways and paddy land.
The town was once the seat of the Cochin royal family, and that history still shapes its map. The Hill Palace, now a museum, sits in large wooded grounds on the town's edge. The Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple anchors the old centre, with streets arranged around it. Tripunittura is also known for Athachamayam, the procession that opens the Onam season.
