Troy sits on the east bank of the Hudson River, just below the point where the Mohawk joins it, facing Watervliet and Green Island across the water. Its map tells a clear geographic story. A flat strip of downtown along the river is laid out on a regular grid, and to the east the land rises sharply as the streets climb onto the hill.
In the nineteenth century Troy was one of America's industrial centres. It was known for iron and for detachable shirt collars, which earned it the nickname Collar City. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1824, occupies the hill above downtown. The city is also linked to Samuel Wilson, a local meatpacker often cited as the origin of Uncle Sam.
