Tyldesley is in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, between Leigh and Manchester. The older town sits along a ridge, with terraced streets running off the main road and falling away to the south. Beyond them lies flatter, lower ground: the former mosslands and colliery land that were reclaimed after mining ended, now a mix of fields and green spaces.
The town grew in the industrial era on cotton spinning and coal mining. Both industries have gone, but they left their mark in the dense rows of terraced housing and in the landscape around the town. The Astley Green Colliery Museum nearby preserves the headgear and engine house of a former pit.
