Ungaran lies just south of Semarang in Central Java, where the coastal lowlands begin to climb toward the volcanic massif of Mount Ungaran. It is the administrative centre of Semarang Regency. On the map, the town stretches along the main road and toll road that lead inland toward Salatiga and Surakarta, and streets branch off onto the rising ground.
The land rises steadily toward the mountain, so slopes and small valleys shape the street pattern instead of a regular grid. Neighbourhoods follow the contours, and between them the map shows green patches of gardens, fields and plantations. Higher up, the ground is more open, cut by winding roads that lead to cooler hill villages.
