Ust’-Kut lies in Irkutsk Oblast where the Kuta river flows into the Lena, and its name refers to that meeting point. The town is long and thin on the map, stretched for many kilometres along the river in a series of districts separated by forested hills. Streets rarely form a continuous grid; instead, each district has its own cluster, linked by a single main road.
The river port of Osetrovo is one of the busiest points on the upper Lena, where cargo from the railway is transferred to barges heading north toward Yakutia. The Baikal–Amur Mainline passes through the town as well, with Lena station close to the port, so railway lines and wharves form a distinctive industrial band along the water.
Founded in the seventeenth century as a Cossack winter settlement, Ust’-Kut is one of the older Russian towns in eastern Siberia. An Ust’-Kut map poster shows its unusual linear shape clearly, the broad river curving through the frame, the tributary at the centre and the districts strung along the banks between the hills.
The two rivers meet near the centre of town, the wide Lena and the smaller Kuta, forming the natural focal point of the whole composition.
Wharves and rail sidings line the Lena in the port district, a dense industrial edge where railway and river transport meet and exchange cargo.
Separate neighbourhoods are strung along the river for kilometres, each a compact cluster of streets, giving the map a rare, elongated shape that suits the wider print formats.

Aiheā Ust’-Kut
Ust’-Kut is a place of work, rotations and river seasons, and many people have spent years there without ever seeing it as a whole. The map shows the full line of the town at once, a surprising view even for those who know it well.
