Vestavia Hills lies just south of Birmingham, Alabama, on and around Shades Mountain, a long ridge that runs parallel to the city. The terrain shapes almost every street. Roads follow ridgelines and valleys rather than a grid, curling into loops and cul-de-sacs that trace the contours of the land. Few straight lines survive outside the main highways.
The city takes its name from Vestavia, the estate of Birmingham mayor George Ward, who built a round, Roman-style temple dedicated to Vesta on the ridge in the 1920s. The estate gave the suburb its name, and a temple associated with it remains a local landmark. U.S. Route 31 climbs over the mountain here, forming the main spine of the city.
