Vila do Conde stands on the north bank of the river Ave where it meets the Atlantic, a short distance north of Porto. On the map the river makes a final curve before the sea. The old town gathers along its bank with a riverside quay and narrow streets, and the coastline runs straight north toward neighbouring Póvoa de Varzim.
The Convent of Santa Clara stands above the river. From it runs the aqueduct of the same name, a line of arches that once carried water to the convent over several kilometres. From above, the aqueduct is a thin, purposeful stroke crossing the town's newer streets, a feature few small Portuguese towns can put on a map.
The town has a long shipbuilding tradition, recalled today by a replica of a sixteenth-century ship on the riverfront. It is also known for bobbin lace and for an international short film festival. A Vila do Conde map poster shows the setting for all of this: the river, the quay, the beach and the old centre in between.
The river swings through its last bend and opens to the Atlantic beside the town, drawing a wide curve and a clear edge between the historic quarter and the southern bank.
A long chain of arches runs inland from the convent across the town. On the map it appears as a slender line cutting through otherwise ordinary residential blocks.
Beaches and seafront avenues run straight north from the river mouth, giving the map a strong vertical edge where the street pattern meets the open ocean.
