Villajoyosa, known in Valencian as La Vila Joiosa, is a coastal town in the province of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca between Alicante and Benidorm. It is known for the brightly painted houses of its old quarter, which face the sea in a row of colours. It also has a long tradition of chocolate making, which continues in local factories today.
On the map, the old town forms a dense cluster of narrow streets on a rise near the mouth of the Amadorio river, with the beach stretched out below. Newer districts extend inland and along the coast in more regular blocks, and a harbour sits at one end of the seafront. Beyond the town, hills and orchards climb away from the shore.
