Voluntari borders Bucharest to the northeast and has become one of the capital's fastest-growing neighbours. It was granted town status in 2004, and much of its present shape comes from the decades since. On a map two patterns sit side by side: the long, straight streets of the original settlement, and newer housing estates laid out as compact grids and cul-de-sacs.
Part of the Pipera office and residential area lies within Voluntari, so the western side merges almost seamlessly into Bucharest's built-up fabric. Main roads link the town to the city's ring and northern districts. Toward the east and north the development loosens, and open plots and the green spaces of the surrounding Ilfov countryside begin.
