Vriddhāchalam is a town in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, on the Manimuktha River. Its name is usually explained as meaning old hill, and the town has long been associated with the Vriddhagiriswarar Temple, dedicated to Shiva. On the map, the temple compound stands out as a large rectangle at the centre, with streets arranged around it in the manner of many Tamil temple towns.
Beyond the old centre, the plan becomes more practical. Vriddhāchalam is a railway junction, and the tracks cross the town in long, confident lines that divide one district from another. Newer residential streets fill the land between the railway and the river, and paddy fields and water tanks surround the edges. The river curves past the town, adding a soft line to a mostly angular plan.
The town is also known for its ceramic industry, which has made it a regional name for pottery and clay products. A Vriddhāchalam map poster brings together these layers: the temple at the heart, the streets around it, the railway lines and the river bend, all reduced to clean black lines that make the structure of the town easy to read.
The Vriddhagiriswarar Temple compound forms a large, orderly block in the middle of town, with surrounding streets aligned to its walls.
Several rail lines meet here and cross the map in long, straight strokes, giving the poster a clear framework beyond the old centre.
The river passes along the town and bends gently through the frame, a curved counterpoint to the right angles of the temple streets.
