Te mape
Vryheid lies in northern KwaZulu-Natal, in rolling grassland country surrounded by hills. From above, its centre follows a regular grid of long, straight streets laid out in the late nineteenth century, with residential areas and townships spreading outward along the valleys and ridges beyond it, and farmland extending to the horizon on every side.
The town was founded in 1884 as the capital of the Nieuwe Republiek, a short-lived Boer republic, before being absorbed into the South African Republic and later into Natal. Its name means freedom in Dutch. For much of the twentieth century the district was known for coal mining, and cattle farming remains important in the area.
A Vryheid map poster shows a small town with a clear and orderly heart, its grid set against hills that shape the edges of development. Railway lines and roads approach from several directions, and the open veld around the town gives the composition generous space, so the geometry of the old plan stands out cleanly.
The historic centre is laid out as a regular grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks, a plan that reads clearly and calmly from above.
Hills rise around the town, and newer neighbourhoods follow the slopes and valleys, giving the outer map a looser, more irregular pattern.
Railway lines tied to the region's coal and agricultural trade enter the town, drawing long curving lines across the surrounding country.
