Waikīkī occupies a strip of land on the south shore of Oʻahu, part of Honolulu. From above, its shape is unusually clear: the Ala Wai Canal curves along the inland side, the ocean and beach run along the other, and the district fills the space between. At its eastern end, Kapiʻolani Park opens out toward the slopes of Diamond Head.
The canal was dug in the early twentieth century to drain the wetlands that once covered the area, making the modern neighbourhood possible. Kalākaua Avenue runs close to the beach, Kūhiō Avenue parallels it inland, and a dense grid of short streets connects them. Hotels and towers line the shore, while the reef edge shows offshore.
Waikīkī has a long history as a centre of surfing, closely associated with Duke Kahanamoku, and its beaches remain some of the most famous in the world. A Waikīkī map poster frames the whole peninsula-like district: the canal, the avenues, the beach and the crater at the end, all in one clean composition.
The canal forms the inland edge of Waikīkī, a smooth curved line that separates the district from the rest of Honolulu and gives the map its distinctive shape.
The main avenue follows the shoreline through the district, with the hotels and beach on one side and the dense street grid on the other.
The volcanic crater rises beyond Kapiʻolani Park at the eastern end, its rounded rim making a dramatic endpoint for the map.

Waikīkī is a place of honeymoons, family holidays, surf trips and first visits to Hawaiʻi. A map marks a particular trip or a long love for the island, and the canal and crater make it instantly recognisable.
