Wantagh is a hamlet on the South Shore of Long Island, in Nassau County's Town of Hempstead. On a map, its northern part is a steady pattern of suburban streets, while the south breaks into narrow canals, marinas and waterfront lots that reach toward the bays. The contrast between those two halves gives the map its character.
Running north to south through the community is the Wantagh State Parkway, which crosses the marshes and bays to Jones Beach State Park. For generations of Long Islanders, the drive down that road meant summer at the ocean. Wantagh Park, on the water in the south, adds a green edge to the neighbourhood.
The Long Island Rail Road crosses the hamlet from east to west, with a station near the centre, linking Wantagh with New York City. A Wantagh map poster brings the whole cross-section together: rail line, residential grid, fingers of water and the parkway reaching into the marshland beyond. It is a very South Shore composition, drawn in clean lines.
Parallel canals cut into the southern neighbourhoods, forming long, narrow fingers of water between rows of houses and small boat slips.
The parkway runs south through the hamlet and across the marshes toward Jones Beach, drawing a strong, deliberate line through the map.
The Long Island Rail Road crosses Wantagh from east to west, a straight line that separates the streets and marks the commuter centre.
