West Memphis lies in Crittenden County, Arkansas, directly across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee. The land here is part of the alluvial plain of the Mississippi Delta, almost perfectly flat, and on the map the city spreads in a broad grid of streets with farmland stretching away to the west. Between the town and the river lie low floodplain ground and protective levees.
Transportation defines the city's shape. Interstates 40 and 55 meet here, and their broad ribbons and interchanges cut through the grid, while two bridges carry traffic east across the river into Memphis. Rail lines run alongside the highways, and truck stops and logistics sites cluster near the junctions. The city grew, above all, as a crossing point on the river.
A West Memphis map poster shows a city shaped by movement: the straight lines of interstates and rail, the regular grid, the wide curve of the Mississippi and the edge of Memphis on the far bank. It is a strong graphic image, with heavy structural lines set against the open, flat land of the Delta.
Interstates 40 and 55 converge in West Memphis, their wide carriageways and interchanges creating the boldest lines on the poster and dividing the grid into distinct sections.
To the east, the Hernando de Soto Bridge and the Memphis–Arkansas Bridge span the river, connecting the city's road network to Memphis on the opposite bank.
Between the city and the river lies low, open floodplain protected by levees, a broad empty band that separates the two cities on the map.
