Yalvaç lies in the lake district of inner Anatolia, in the north of Isparta province, on a plain at the western foot of the Sultan Mountains. From above, the town spreads across gently sloping ground, with a dense old centre, newer districts to the sides and orchards and fields around. The mountains rise to the east, and roads lead out toward the surrounding lake basins.
Just north of the modern town lie the ruins of Antioch of Pisidia, a Hellenistic and Roman city that became an important Roman colony. It is known to Christians as a place visited by the Apostle Paul during his journeys. The excavated site, with its streets, temple and aqueduct remains, sits on a low rise above Yalvaç.
A Yalvaç map poster places the town and its ancient neighbour side by side. The modern streets form an irregular network typical of Anatolian towns, while the archaeological site adds an open, separate area at the edge. Together they show a place that has been inhabited, in one form or another, for more than two thousand years.
The ancient city lies just north of town, its excavated streets and building foundations forming an open area distinct from the dense modern neighbourhoods.
The heart of Yalvaç is a compact web of narrow, irregular streets, with newer, more regular districts built around it over the past decades.
To the east the land rises toward the Sultan Mountains, and the orchards and fields at their foot create a pattern of plots and tracks around the town.
