Yaroslavl sits on the right bank of the Volga at the spot where the smaller Kotorosl flows into it. On a map the meeting of the two rivers forms a sharp tongue of land, the Strelka, and the historic centre spreads back from that point in a fan of streets. It is one of the oldest cities on the Volga, traditionally dated to the early eleventh century and named after Yaroslav the Wise.
The centre owes much of its present shape to a regular plan drawn up in the late eighteenth century, which laid radial avenues and squares over the older medieval layout. That ensemble of streets, churches and embankments is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond it, bridges carry the city across both rivers into later districts laid out in wider, looser blocks.
A Yaroslavl map poster captures the contrast between these layers: the dense fan of the historic core, the broad curve of the Volga with its long embankment, and the Kotorosl winding in from the southwest. In black and white the rivers become pale bands that frame the town on two sides, and the street pattern reads almost like a diagram of how the city grew outward.

A late eighteenth-century plan gave the core its avenues converging on central squares. The pattern, now part of a UNESCO-listed ensemble, stands out sharply against the surrounding grid.
The broad Volga and the narrower Kotorosl divide the city into separate banks, and the bridges between them make natural reference points across the whole composition.

Aiheā Yaroslavl
For people from Yaroslavl, or those who have walked along the Volga embankment, the map is a compact way to keep the city close. The river confluence gives the poster a strong central point that works well above a desk or in a hallway.
