Yuzhnoural’sk grew up in the mid-twentieth century around a large thermal power station built on the Uy River in the south of Chelyabinsk Oblast. The river was dammed to supply cooling water, and the resulting reservoir now dominates any map of the town: a long, irregular body of water with inlets and bays, bordered by forest and open steppe.
The town itself follows the logic of Soviet planning. Residential districts sit in wide blocks separated by straight avenues, with larger courtyards between the apartment buildings and an industrial zone set apart around the power plant. The contrast between that regular order and the loose outline of the reservoir gives the map most of its character.
A Yuzhnoural’sk map poster captures a place shaped by one project. The water, the plant and the housing were designed together, and you can still see that connection from above. In black and white, the reservoir becomes a large, calm shape against which the planned town reads clearly, a typical company town of the Urals rendered as graphic design.
The dammed river forms a wide reservoir with a ragged shoreline, the largest single shape on the map and a popular spot for swimming and fishing in summer.
The thermal power plant that gave the town its purpose sits apart from the housing, with its own access roads, rail sidings and cooling water channels.
Residential blocks are laid out along straight streets with large internal courtyards, a clear example of postwar Soviet town planning that shows as a regular pattern.
