Zastron is a farming town in the southeastern Free State, close to the border with Lesotho. Its streets follow the tidy grid typical of the region's nineteenth-century towns: wide roads, long blocks and a church at the centre. What sets it apart is the setting. The town lies at the foot of the Aasvoëlberg, and the grid stops where the ground begins to rise toward the sandstone cliffs.
The mountain is known for a natural hole through the rock, called the Eye of Zastron, which can be seen from the surrounding area. Around the town, the land opens into sheep and cattle country, with roads heading out across wide plains toward neighbouring towns and the Lesotho border posts. Everything beyond the grid is open space, and the map reflects that.
On a Zastron map poster, the regular blocks of the town sit in a large expanse of empty ground, with a few roads reaching out across it. The effect is spare, almost diagrammatic, and it conveys the sense of distance that characterises this part of South Africa. It is a small subject, but a clear and handsome one.
Straight, broad streets meet at right angles in a compact rectangle, a layout shared by many Free State towns founded as farming and church centres.
The street pattern ends abruptly where the Aasvoëlberg begins to climb, so one side of the town has a sharp, natural boundary rather than fading out.
Beyond the last blocks, only a few roads and farm tracks cross the plain, leaving generous empty space that gives the whole poster a quiet, balanced look.

Aiheā Zastron
For families with roots in the southeastern Free State, or for anyone who has driven through on the way to Lesotho, Zastron is a meaningful map. Its simple grid and wide surroundings look good on a wall and give it a calm presence without clutter.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps a farm name, a family surname or the year someone left. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand in particular suits the dry, open landscape.
