Zeerust is in the North West province, close to the border with Botswana, in the open bushveld of the Marico district. From above, the old town forms a regular grid of broad streets and large blocks, laid out in the typical style of a nineteenth-century South African rural town, with space for wagons to turn.
Main roads to Mahikeng, Gaborone and the east come together here, so the town sits at the meeting point of several long, straight routes. Newer residential areas lie apart from the old grid, each with its own street pattern. Around them, bushveld, farmland and river courses fill the map with large, open shapes.
