Zhenlai is a county of Baicheng, in the northwest of Jilin province, on the broad Songnen Plain near the borders with Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia. From above, the county town is a compact grid on very flat land, with long straight roads, field boundaries and drainage lines stretching toward the horizon. Rivers, marshes and shallow lakes break up the plain around it.
The county is home to the Momoge National Nature Reserve, a large wetland where migrating cranes, including the rare Siberian crane, stop each spring and autumn. Farming shapes most of the landscape, with rice, maize and other crops grown across the plain. The canals and embankments that cross it show how carefully the water is managed.
