Bridges north
Long crossings join Taipa to the Macao peninsula. On the poster they are thin, confident strokes over open water, and they are the most striking lines in the composition.

Zhuojiacun sits in the parish of Our Lady of Carmo, which covers Taipa and the land reclaimed around it. On the map, the scale changes sharply from block to block. There are narrow, irregular lanes where older settlement survives, and there are large, straight-edged plots on newer ground. Water is never far away, and the coastline looks engineered rather than natural.
Taipa was once a separate island. Land reclamation has joined it to Coloane through the flat strip known as Cotai, and several long bridges cross the water north to the Macao peninsula. A map of this area therefore shows layers of history: small streets from before the landfill, broad avenues laid on top of it, and bridge decks reaching across the harbour.
A Zhuojiacun map poster captures a place where very little ground holds a great deal of city. Tall blocks do not show up in a street plan. What you see instead is how tightly the roads are packed, how clean the reclaimed edges are, and how the bridges tie everything to the peninsula. It is a small area that still reads as complex.
Long crossings join Taipa to the Macao peninsula. On the poster they are thin, confident strokes over open water, and they are the most striking lines in the composition.
Much of the surrounding shoreline is man-made. The straight seawalls and geometric plots contrast with the curving lanes of the older parts of the island.
South of Taipa, the land made by reclamation joins it to Coloane. That turns two islands into one continuous shape on the map.
