Te mape
Zīr Āb lies in Savadkuh County in Māzandarān province, in a deep valley on the northern side of the Alborz mountains. The terrain decides everything here. The town cannot spread outward, so it stretches along the valley floor. On a map it appears as a thin band of streets, hemmed in by steep, wooded slopes on both sides.
Three lines run through the valley together: the Talar River, the main road between the Caspian lowlands and the Tehran plateau, and the Trans-Iranian Railway. They twist and cross as the valley bends, and the town's streets branch off them. Zīr Āb has long been associated with coal mining, which is part of why the town grew where it did.
A Zīr Āb map poster works because the geography is so clear. The composition is almost entirely about direction: a single strip of settlement cutting across an empty, mountainous frame. In a minimal black-and-white style, the parallel lines of river, road and rail become the whole story, and the print feels more like a drawing of a landscape than a street plan.
The built-up area follows the valley floor in a long ribbon, only a few blocks wide in places, with the slopes pressing in on either side.
The Talar River, the highway and the railway run close together through town, weaving around and crossing one another as the valley turns.
Steep, wooded mountainsides surround the town. They have almost no streets, so they appear on the map as broad empty space that makes the narrow settlement stand out.
