Zomba lies in southern Malawi at the base of the Zomba Plateau, a massif that rises steeply above the town. On a map, the relationship is immediate: the streets gather on the lower ground and stop where the slopes begin, while winding roads climb up onto the plateau. The contrast between the flat, settled town and the high, open ground above gives the city an unusual, lopsided shape.
Zomba was the capital of the colonial protectorate and then of independent Malawi until the government moved to Lilongwe in the 1970s. Its older administrative buildings remain, and the town is also home to a major campus of the University of Malawi. It has a quieter, more academic character than the country's larger cities.
A Zomba map poster places the town against the mass of the plateau, so the composition feels anchored by landscape. The fine network of streets below and the looping mountain roads above make two very different textures in one frame, which suits a place whose identity has always been tied to the high ground behind it.
The plateau rises directly behind the town, and on the map its steep edge forms a clear boundary between the dense streets below and the open, higher ground above.
Roads leave the town and wind up the slopes in tight curves, drawing looping lines that stand out against the straighter streets of the town itself.
The former government area, with its older administrative buildings and campus grounds, gives parts of the town a more spacious layout than typical commercial districts.

Aiheā Zomba
Zomba means a great deal to people who studied there or grew up in its shadow. A map of the town and plateau is a quiet reminder of that place, and it looks equally at home in an office or a living room.
