Abasolo lies in the southwest of Guanajuato, in the Bajío, the broad agricultural lowland of central Mexico. The town has a regular colonial-style grid of streets around a central plaza and church, and beyond it the land opens into wide, flat fields divided into large rectangular plots.
The municipality is known for its thermal springs, and balnearios with hot-water pools draw visitors from across the region. The town takes its name from Mariano Abasolo, one of the insurgent leaders in the early stage of Mexico's War of Independence, who was born here, a link to the independence history that runs through Guanajuato.
