Aberystwyth sits on Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales, and its map is framed by the sea. The promenade follows a long curve of shoreline between Constitution Hill to the north and the castle headland to the south. The rivers Rheidol and Ystwyth meet near the harbour, and the town centre is packed into the narrow ground behind the seafront.
It is a university town. Aberystwyth University's Penglais campus spreads over the hill to the east, next to the National Library of Wales, one of the country's major cultural institutions. Constitution Hill has a cliff railway up its seaward face, and the ruins of a thirteenth-century castle stand on the headland beside the old town.

The Rheidol and Ystwyth meet near the harbour at the south of the town, adding curving water channels next to the dense streets.
