Acton lies in the London Borough of Ealing, between Shepherd's Bush and Ealing. From above, it is a dense network of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, crossed east to west by Uxbridge Road and bordered to the north by the A40 Western Avenue. Rail lines crisscross the area, with yards and industrial land around Park Royal to the north.
Acton is often noted for having more stations bearing its name than any other place in Britain, a result of the many railway lines built through it. Historically a village on the road west from London, it grew rapidly with the railways and later became home to laundries, factories and workshops.
