Agüimes sits on the eastern side of Gran Canaria, a few kilometres inland on the slopes that climb from the coastal plain toward the island's centre. The municipality stretches from mountain ravines down to the sea, so a map of it combines two very different patterns: the compact historic town inland, and the newer, more regular streets of Arinaga and the other coastal settlements.
The old centre is small and well kept, with narrow streets and low whitewashed houses gathered around the church of San Sebastián and its square. For centuries the town was the seat of a lordship held by the bishops of the Canary Islands, which explains the prominence of its church. Barranco de Guayadeque
The ravine appears as a deep, winding cleft in the hills near the town. Its road follows the valley floor past cave dwellings carved into the rock.
Arinaga coast
On the coast, Arinaga adds a straighter grid and a long shoreline to the municipality. This clean Atlantic edge contrasts with the organic streets of the inland town.
