Aix-en-Provence began in 122 BC as Aquae Sextiae, a Roman settlement built around warm springs, and the old town still keeps the compact outline of its former walls. On a map that outline is unmistakable. Boulevard ring
A near-continuous loop of boulevards follows the line of the former ramparts. It sharply separates the dense medieval centre from the looser, greener districts that grew around it.
