Akashi stretches along the northern shore of the Akashi Strait, the narrow channel between Honshu and Awaji Island at the eastern end of the Seto Inland Sea. From above, the city is long and thin. Rail lines and coastal roads run parallel to the water, fishing harbours notch the shoreline, and residential districts spread gently inland toward low hills, reservoirs and farmland.
Just north of the main station, the moats and stone walls of Akashi Castle survive inside a large park, their rectangular outlines sharp against the surrounding streets. To the east, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge sets off from the shore toward Awaji. When it opened in 1998, its central span was the longest of any suspension bridge in the world, a record it held for more than two decades.
Akashi also lies on the 135th meridian east, the line that defines Japan Standard Time, and a municipal planetarium marks the spot. The town is known for its octopus and for akashiyaki, soft egg-rich dumplings served in broth. An Akashi map poster captures the steady coastline, the castle moats and the start of the bridge in a single, wide composition.
The bridge leaves the eastern shore and crosses the strait to Awaji Island. On the map its straight line over open water is one of the most striking features of the whole coast.
Akashi Castle's moats and walls sit within a spacious park north of the station. Their geometric outline, surrounded by water and trees, stands out clearly against the finer grain of the town.
The 135° east meridian passes through the city. It is invisible on the ground, but it gives Akashi coordinates with a special meaning, since Japan's standard time is defined by this line.

Ko e hā ʻa Akashi
Akashi works well for anyone who has watched ships pass through the strait or crossed the bridge to Awaji. The horizontal sweep of the coastline suits wide walls, and the balance between sea and town gives the print a quiet, open feel.
