Akune is a coastal city in the northwest of Kagoshima Prefecture, facing the East China Sea on the island of Kyushu. From above, the town stretches along a narrow band of flat land between the shoreline and wooded hills, with its streets following the coast and small harbours marking the water's edge.
The sea shapes both the map and the town's life. Fishing has long been central here, and the port areas appear as distinct shapes of breakwaters and quays. The railway along this coast runs close to the water, adding a thin line that tracks the shore.
An Akune map poster shows a place defined by its edge: the curve of the coastline, the tight grid of the centre and the roads that climb inland into the hills. It is a calm, balanced image that suits anyone with ties to this quiet part of Kyushu.
The town occupies a narrow band of level land between hills and sea, so its streets run mostly parallel to the shore.
Breakwaters and quays form clean geometric outlines along the water, some of the most striking details on the finished poster.
A rail line follows the western coast of Kagoshima close to the water, drawing a long line beside the town's shoreline.
