Al Balyanā lies on the west side of the Nile in Sohag Governorate, Upper Egypt. On a map the setting is very clear. A green strip of irrigated land follows the river, and the town sits within it. Beyond, the pale open desert starts where cultivation ends. Canals and field roads run roughly parallel to the Nile, crossed by lanes that link villages scattered through the farmland.
The town is best known as the gateway to Abydos, one of ancient Egypt's most important religious sites. It lies a short distance to the southwest, on the desert edge. There the Temple of Seti I, with its finely carved reliefs and the list of kings known as the Abydos King List, draws visitors from across the world.
An Al Balyanā map poster shows a dense town centre of short, closely packed streets, the long lines of canals and the rail line, and the sharp boundary between farmed land and desert. In monochrome, that edge becomes the main feature of the design. It is the pattern that has shaped settlement along the Nile for thousands of years.

Irrigation canals run through the farmland roughly parallel to the Nile, and field roads and village lanes follow them.
A route leads southwest from the town towards the Abydos temples on the desert margin, linking modern Al Balyanā with its ancient neighbour.

The map suits Egyptology enthusiasts, travellers who visited Abydos, and families from Sohag living far from the Nile. The contrast between valley and desert gives it a strong, simple composition.
