Al Burayqah, often written Brega, lies on the coast of the Gulf of Sirte in eastern Libya, where the desert meets the Mediterranean. It is one of the country's main oil and gas centres, with a terminal, refinery and port handling exports from fields in the interior. From above, the town is not a single cluster but several distinct areas spread along the shore.
The industrial zone, with its tanks, pipelines and jetties, sits near the water, while residential districts were planned separately a short distance away. The planned streets have the regular layout of a company town, very different from the organic growth of older Libyan settlements. An Al Burayqah map poster shows these separate parts and the open ground between them.
The town became widely known internationally during the 2011 conflict, when control of it changed hands several times. On the map, what stands out is the landscape: a straight, open coastline, desert roads running inland, and built areas set in empty ground. In black and white, the composition is sparse and graphic, defined by the edge of the sea.
Jetties, storage tanks and industrial sites line the coast. On the map they form a strong cluster of geometric shapes along the edge of the Gulf of Sirte.
The residential districts were laid out separately from the industrial zone, with a regular street plan typical of towns built around the oil industry.
The Gulf of Sirte coast runs long and fairly straight past the town, with open desert behind it. It gives the map a clean edge and plenty of negative space.

For people who have lived and worked in Brega, including engineers and families on long industry assignments, this map is a precise reminder of a very particular coastal town and the distinct parts it is made of.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised in English or Arabic. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand reflects the desert setting, and Blueprint suits the planned layout.
