Al Mijlad is a town in West Kordofan, Sudan, set in open savanna country where plains, seasonal watercourses and grazing lands dominate. On a map the town forms a loose network of unpaved and paved streets, with larger compounds and open ground between blocks, and tracks leading out across the surrounding landscape.
The town lends its name to the Muglad Basin, a large sedimentary basin known for oil exploration and production in Sudan and South Sudan. The region is also traditionally associated with pastoralist communities who move herds across the plains according to the seasons, which gives the area around the town an open, wide character.
An Al Mijlad map poster shows a settlement shaped by open space rather than by rivers or hills. The widely spaced streets and routes heading into the savanna form a spare, airy composition, and the black-and-white design emphasises how the town sits within a vast, level landscape.
Streets are widely spaced, with large blocks and open plots between them, giving the map a light, airy texture quite different from denser cities.
Roads and tracks leave the town in several directions across the plains, linking Al Mijlad with villages, grazing areas and other towns of Kordofan.
The town gives its name to the Muglad Basin, a major geological basin in Sudan, making this small place well known far beyond its size.
