Alajuela sits in Costa Rica's Central Valley, a short distance north-west of San José. Its centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of square blocks around the Parque Central and the cathedral. From above, that grid is unmistakable, and it gradually gives way to looser suburban streets and farmland as the city spreads toward the surrounding slopes.
The city is the birthplace of Juan Santamaría, the drummer boy honoured as a national hero for his part in the 1856 Battle of Rivas, and the country's main international airport, just south-west of town, carries his name. Alajuela is also called the city of mangoes, after the mango trees that shade its central park.
An Alajuela map poster shows a clear, orderly city: the chequered blocks of the centre, the main roads leading toward San José and the airport, and, in wider views, the long runway as a single bold stroke. To the north the land rises toward Poás Volcano, and the street pattern loosens as it climbs, so the map moves from valley floor to highland.
Regular square blocks spread out from the Parque Central and cathedral, forming one of the clearest chequerboard patterns in the Central Valley.
Juan Santamaría International Airport lies just outside the city, and in wider framings its long runway appears as a strong, straight line.
Toward the north, streets thin out and bend as the ground climbs toward Poás, in contrast to the flat precision of the centre.
