Alexandroupoli lies on the northern coast of the Aegean in Greek Thrace, not far from the Evros delta and the Turkish border. The city is laid out in a mostly regular grid set parallel to a long, straight shoreline. A seafront promenade runs along the water, the port forms a clear geometric shape at the edge, and hills rise gently inland.
The town was founded relatively recently, in the nineteenth century, originally under the name Dedeağaç, and took its present name in the 1920s. Its lighthouse on the waterfront is the city's main symbol, and the port and railway connect it to the rest of Thrace and to the islands, including Samothrace.
