Alicante lies on Spain's Costa Blanca, and its map is organised around the sea. The port and marina take up the waterfront. Beaches run away to the north and east, and a long palm-lined promenade separates the harbour from the city. Behind it the grid of the modern centre spreads inland. The seafront promenade runs parallel to the port and marina. The piers, breakwaters and moorings create crisp geometric shapes along the water's edge.
